Heavy Metal Pioneers is an essential video for the collection any Purple fan, even though it is now woefully outdated. There was a time when Joe Lynn Turner was in the band, and Ritchie Blackmore was on guitar, but now of course it's Morse-Gillan-Glover-Paice-Lord (no complaints here), but it also means that this footage is caught between a rock and a hard place. You get an hour-long thumbnail sketch of the band's history, with interviews, snatches of concert footage, and still pictures. It's great that there's no annoying voice-over a la "VH-1 Behind The Music," and getting to hear the ultra-reclusive Blackmore speak is a revelation.
