1857 Bank of Upper Canada Half Penny Token. These copper tokens were issued by the Bank of Upper Canada due to a severe coin shortage in the Province of Canada
Issuance Period: These half-penny and one-penny bank tokens were authorized in 1850 and issued between 1850 and 1857 by the Bank of Upper Canada.
Design: The obverse (front) of the token features St. George slaying the dragon, a design based on Benedetto Pistrucci's 1817 British sovereign design. The reverse (back) displays the then-obsolete Coat-of-Arms of Upper Canada with the denomination below.
Mintage: The 1850 issue was struck at the Royal Mint in London, while later issues in 1852, 1854, and 1857 were partly produced by Heaton & Sons in Birmingham using dies from the Royal Mint. The initials "R.K. & Co." visible on some tokens refer to Rowe, Kentish & Co., the London agents who placed the orders for the Bank of Upper Canada. Fate of the 1857 Issue:
