“Montreal artist Edwin H. Holgate (1892–1977) was a central figure in the development of modern Canadian art during the 1920s and 1930s. Trained in Paris, he gained a reputation for his paintings of sensual nude figures set in Canadian wilderness landscapes and for portraits that show his full expressiveness and sensitivity. The Group of Seven admired these works and invited him to become their eighth member in 1929. A lover of the outdoors, Holgate painted both winter and summer views throughout Quebec—rivers and hills in the Charlevoix and the Laurentians, fishing villages in the Gaspé and near the Labrador coast. His travels took him to the Skeena River region of British Columbia, where he sketched and painted the First Nations people and their mountain communities. Holgate drew on his store of Canadian subjects for the wood engravings that earned him a place as one of CA’s finest printmakers.”
