The purpose of the book is somewhat told in the summary on bottom of title page "The Erie Railroad Company in the establishment of apprentice schools at its different shops, has for its primary object not the making of mechanical engineers out of shop workmen, but the making of first-class skilled mechanics to recruit the shop forces with men trained and educated in Erie Standards and Erie methods."
