Mola applique refers to a traditional textile art form created by the Guna (formerly Kuna) people of Panama. It is a specific type of reverse appliqué technique where multiple layers of fabric—typically two to seven—are carefully stacked and basted together. The design is formed by cutting away parts of the top layers to reveal the contrasting colors beneath, with the edges of the cut layers turned under and sewn down using nearly invisible stitches. This method allows for intricate, multi-dimensional patterns that often depict geometric shapes, animals, plants, and scenes from daily life or popular culture.
