On Opening Night of the 2006-07 season, the Celtics paid tribute to team patriarch Red Auerbach, who had passed away just days before. Pregame ceremonies included a video tribute, the laying of a cigar on his TD Garden seat and special jersey patches bearing his nickname. No player wore the No. 2 jersey because it was officially retired for Auerbach in 1985. The number signified that Auerbach was the second most important person in franchise history behind only team founder Walter Brown.
