At the center of the story is sex, not the usual triangle but a rectangle, involving four very tough customers: the greedy old landlord Rokubei (Ganjiro Nakamura, End of Summer, Floating Weeds); his slut of a wife, Osugi (Isuzu Yamada, Osaka Elegy); the thief she's been sleeping with, Sutekichi (Toshiro Mifune, Stray Dog); and her unmarried sister Okayo (Kyoko Kagawa, Mother), the one the thief really loves. In this sex driven game of musical chairs, somebody has to come up short and somebody has to die.
Which will it be?
Also forced to live together under the same dingy roof are a whore who thinks she's still a maiden, an actor who prefers the tavern to the stage, a samurai with no sword, and a priest on the run. They are soon at one another's throats.
