This is a long out-of-print Pulitzer Prize-winning study of the Old Northwest (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin) in the "Pioneer Period" following the War of 1812. R. Carlyle Buley (1893-1968), a professor of History at Indiana University, surveys the settlement of the Old Northwest, covering the business of buying and selling land, settlement patterns, economic life, social institutions, educational developments, religious movements, medicine, farming and urban development, as well as political affairs. Buley's work remains a valuable resource for scholars but also a general audience of people interested in early America. Very good condition with tight binding and clean unmarked pages. The slipcase has some wear on the edges but is still functional. Buley autographed & inscribed the first volume to his Indiana University colleague John E. Stoner, a political scientist. Smoke free home. See all photos. Weighs 5.10 lbs.
